What is your current capacity utilization and what does lead time look like for a program of this volume? A metal fabricator already running at full capacity is not the right partner for a growing program.
What processes are in-house versus subcontracted? Every handoff to a subcontractor is a point where quality, lead time, and communication can break down. Know what you are getting before you commit.
Quality
What does your quality control process look like before production begins? A metal fabricator with a clear, documented quality process gives you confidence that what gets built at volume matches what was validated.
How do you handle a quality issue when one occurs? The fabricators worth working with will tell you exactly: root cause analysis, corrective action, and what changes to prevent recurrence. A vague answer is a red flag.
The working relationship
Can we visit the facility? Any metal fabricator worth working with will say yes without hesitation. A facility visit tells you more than any capability document. Reluctance to host a visit is itself information.
What does the relationship look like at five years? A supplier who has thought about the long-term relationship is a supplier who is planning for one.
