Why Powder Coating is More Than a Finish

April 14, 2026Powder Coating

Powder coating is often treated as the last line in a specification. Colour, texture, done. That is easy to underestimate, and the consequences show up in the field, not on the quote.

Powder coating is not decoration. It is a protection system. The difference between a part that maintains its integrity over time and one that starts failing early often comes down to how seriously we take the coating process.

What the Powder Coating process involves

At JGW, the powder coat process begins with a three stage iron phosphate wash. The wash removes oils, scale, and surface contamination from the metal and creates a bonded layer that gives the powder something to adhere to at the surface level, not just sit on top of. Parts that skip this stage may look correct coming off the line. They will not perform the same way in the field.

After the wash, we apply powder electrostatically and cure it. The result is a hard, continuous film that delivers consistent, durable protection across complex geometries, edges, and recesses.

Why in house matters

JGW operates a 600 foot conveyorized powder coat line entirely in house. When powder coating is done in house, parts do not leave the facility between fabrication and finishing. One team is accountable for the part from raw material to finished product. When you subcontracted it, quality visibility and lead time control go with it.

What this looks like in the field

TuffBoxx wildlife resistant containers and PARIS Site Furnishings outdoor products are both manufactured and finished at JGW. They perform in Canadian conditions year after year because the coating process behind them is taken seriously from the first step.

If powder coating is part of your specification, ask whether your supplier does it right. Contact JGW to discuss powder coating requirements for your next project.
