From Prototype to Production Run: How JGW Manages the Full Journey

May 16, 2026Prototyping

Most metal fabricators can handle a production run. Fewer can take a part from a concept drawing through prototype and into repeatable production without losing momentum. The ones that can are worth holding onto.

At JGW Machine, we support engineers and product developers at every stage of that journey. Here is what that process looks like in practice.

Design and prototyping

The design stage is where the most important decisions get made. Material selection, tolerances, and forming methods all affect cost, lead time, and manufacturability downstream. Getting these right early prevents expensive corrections later.

At JGW, our engineering team works with yours at the design stage before any tooling is committed. We look at the drawing from the perspective of the shop floor. Can this part be formed efficiently? Are the tolerances realistic for the specified material? Is there a simpler forming method that delivers the same result at lower cost? These conversations cost nothing at the design stage. The same conversations after tooling is committed are a very different problem.

The prototype stage then confirms that the physical product matches the intent of the design. It is where the concept meets reality and where any remaining adjustments are identified before production begins.

Quality control before production begins

Before any part moves to production, it goes through a complete quality control review. Our team verifies dimensions against the customer specification, resolves any deviations, and does not begin production until the part meets the required standard. The client has full visibility before we commit to volume production.

Scaling to production

JGW reviews the prototype process before committing to a production quote, identifying any tooling or process changes needed to produce the part consistently at volume. The client receives a quote that reflects the actual cost of making the part at scale, not a prototype cost extrapolated upward.

One facility. Every process.

Every step happens under one roof at our 100,000 square foot facility in Princeton, Ontario. Laser cutting, metal spinning, CNC machining, welding, fabrication, and powder coating are all in-house. No vendor handoffs. One team accountable from start to finish.
